POSITION TITLE: Substitute Teacher
FLSA: Non-Exempt Professional
QUALIFICATIONS: Degree from an accredited college university or Emergency Substitute Certificate
REPORTS TO: Human Resources
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Daily contracted services for the school year.
Position Summary: The Substitute Teacher plays an essential role in maintaining continuity of instruction and a positive learning environment in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. This position requires flexibility, professionalism, and the ability to quickly adapt to different classrooms and grade levels while upholding the school’s mission and expectations.
Substitutes are expected to support a structured, respectful classroom environment and ensure that students remain engaged in meaningful learning throughout the day.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Maintain a positive learning environment and respond to the individual needs of the students.

Implement effective lessons in the absence of the regular Instructor.

Ensure that district policies are observed during all activities.

Create a safe classroom environment that is conducive to learning.

Keep all children in the classroom under supervision at all times.

Be familiar with fire exits, fire drill procedures, severe storm and tornado warning procedures. Review notes for the day, take attendance and follow the lesson plans of the teacher.

Maintain confidentiality as defined by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Demonstrate the ability to adapt to circumstances. Exhibit good judgment and use appropriate language or behavior while on assignment.

Report for duty 15 minutes early and remain on duty for the entire assignment, including planning time of the teacher.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

Abide by state statutes, school board policies and regulations.

Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation.
- Leave detailed notes for teacher on any issues experienced during the day.

Other duties as assigned by the Principal, or the Substitute Coordinator
Key Responsibilities:
Instructional Support
- Implement lesson plans provided by the classroom teacher
- Maintain a productive and orderly classroom environment
- Support student learning while encouraging engagement and participation
- Adapt instruction as needed to meet the needs of diverse learners
Classroom Management
- Follow established classroom and school-wide behavior expectations
- Manage student behavior in a respectful and consistent manner
- Ensure student safety at all times, including during transitions, recess, and dismissal
Communication & Professionalism
- Communicate effectively with school staff and administration
- Leave clear, detailed notes for the returning teacher regarding the day’s activities
- Follow all school policies, procedures, and emergency protocols
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions
Qualifications:
- Valid Arizona Substitute Certificate (or ability to obtain)
- IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card required
- Prior experience working with children or in an educational setting preferred
- Strong classroom management and communication skills
- Ability to adapt quickly and remain flexible in a variety of classroom settings
